Hash Names Explained

Why every hasher earns a nickname — and how the story becomes the name

One of the most cherished traditions in Hash House Harriers is the hash name — the alias every hasher earns and is known by for the rest of their hashing life. It is not chosen by the hasher; it is bestowed by the kennel, born from a story, and announced at circle. Here is how it works at DUH3 and across the hashing world.

What Is a Hash Name?

A hash name is the alias every hasher earns and is known by within the hashing world. Once you have a hash name, that is how you are introduced at circle, on the website, and at every hash you attend — anywhere in the world. Your real name is set aside; among hashers, you are your hash name.

When Do You Get One?

Traditionally a hasher earns their name after completing a set number of runs (often five) or after laying their first trail as a hare. The exact threshold varies by kennel — at DUH3, the Mismanagement decides when the time is right for a hasher to be named.

How a Name Is Chosen

A hash name is born from a story. It usually comes from something memorable that happened on trail, at circle, or at the on-after — an embarrassing moment, a funny mishap, a spectacular fail, or something you said that the kennel will never let you forget. The story is the name; the name is the story.

The Naming Ceremony

The naming happens at circle. The hasher is called into the middle, the story behind their name is read aloud for the whole kennel to hear, and the new name is announced. Once spoken at circle, the name is official — it sticks for life and travels with you to every kennel you visit.

A Name for Life

Your hash name follows you wherever you hash around the world. Visit a kennel in another city or country and you will be welcomed by your hash name, not your real one. It is part of the global hashing brotherhood — a shared identity that connects hashers across borders.

You Are Not Meant to Like It

Here is the truth every hasher learns: you are not supposed to like your hash name. The best names are the ones that make you groan, blush, or cringe when they are read out at circle. If you love your name, the kennel probably has not done its job. The name is a badge of honour worn with mild embarrassment — and that embarrassment is exactly the point. Embrace it, laugh at it, and wear it proudly, because every hasher has been there.

The Unwritten Rule

Hashers do not reveal their real names to non-hashers. Among the kennel, everyone is known by their hash name. This keeps the spirit of the hash alive — what happens on trail stays on trail, and who you are outside the hash stays outside the hash.

Where Names Come From

Hash names are drawn from the moments that define you on trail and at circle. Here are the common sources of a name:

The Mishap

You fell in a river, got lost, or took the pack the wrong way — the moment becomes your name.

The Quote

Something you blurted out at circle or on trail that the kennel repeats forever.

The Story

A legendary night, a memorable on-after, or a tale told and retold until it becomes who you are.

The Deed

A single act of glory or shame on trail that defines you in the kennel's memory.
